The CBT/DBT Center invites applicants for an externship beginning July 1, 2024. The CBT/DBT Center is an evidence-based group practice founded by Dr. Chaya Lieba Kobernick and is comprised of a group of highly skilled clinicians who specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, specializing in serving the Orthodox Jewish community.

This externship program is designed for advanced graduate students (second externship and above) in clinical, school-clinical, counseling, and school psychology programs. Training will focus on treatment with children, adolescents, adults, and their families using evidence-based treatments for anxiety disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders, and trauma-related disorders. Externs will be trained and supervised in CBT and DBT-informed treatment. Externs have the choice of also receiving training in comprehensive DBT. Treatments provided include CBT for anxiety and depression, Exposure and Response Prevention, CBT for insomnia, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, DBT (for adults, adolescents, and children), DBT PE, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and Prolonged Exposure. The externship offers a hybrid model, consisting of in-person work in Queens, NY, and virtual work as well.

Clinical and Didactic Experiences:

  • Evidence-based treatments: Clients and families will be treated using evidence-based interventions including CBT, ExRP, MBCT, ACT, DBT, CPT, and PE. Training in these interventions will be provided.

  • Individual and family psychotherapy: Externs will be the primary therapist for cases, including individual therapy, family sessions, and parent training.

  • Group Therapy: Externs will receive training in and will co-lead weekly groups or workshops (DBT Skills Group, ACT-based course, DBT Workshop for Family and Friends, Mindful Mondays).

  • Supervision: Externs will receive one hour of individual supervision per week and one hour of group supervision per week. Supervision will be remote/virtual. Externs will also participate in a DBT Skills Group for Therapists led by Dr. Kobernick with a case consultation component and DBT Consultation Team.

  • Case Presentations: Externs will join our monthly case presentations, and will have the opportunity to prepare and present a case of their own.

  • Didactics: Weekly didactics are provided throughout the year by advanced clinicians. Externs will also be able to join more intensive trainings offered at the center.

  • Presentations: Externs may assist in professional and/or community presentations. Externs may also have the opportunity to participate in research and conference presentations. Together we decide what role externs take, depending on the individual extern's level of experience and comfort in that subject area.

  • Writing: All trainees have the opportunity to contribute articles and/or other types of content relevant to our client population.
